Andrew Pekler presents Tristes Tropiques
Andrew Pekler was born in 1973 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. His family immigrated to the United States in 1980. Since 1995 he has resided in Germany.
Pekler's approach to music-making and sound has evolved considerably over the years but has remained in essence an experiment with found materials, be they samples, instruments or genre conventions.
Andrew Peklerís 2011 album Sentimental Favourites received the Qwartz Electronic Music Award for best album.
"Tristes Tropiques" an immersive audio-visual installationinspired by the writings of structural anthropologist and philosopher Claude Lévi-Strauss.
The installation-performance consists of video footage and field recordings from the jungles of Southeast Asia, which are manipulated in real time and to which Pekler adds his own improvised electronic approximations of various ethnographic musics.
